Superbowl take-out: did you win or loose?

This is for you, Restaurant Operators.

Were you busy with take-out yesterday leading up to the Superbowl? Were you wishing your had staff had a greater understanding of your processes? Maybe you wish you could hire someone to streamline the to-go ordering process. You keep getting quantity from those same job boards, so you carry on, yet there’s still a lack of quality.

The game has changed. The workforce has changed, and its affecting your ability to effectively hire for your restaurant, which is affecting your revenue.

Let’s put this in restaurant terms. Remember when guests used to walk in, grab a menu, and browse through every page? Now, they’re on their phones before they arrive, checking your reviews, looking at food photos, and getting recommendations based on their past orders.

Your future staff is doing the same thing with their job search.

The new generation of restaurant workers wants technology to do the heavy lifting.

Think about it like this: just as your POS system predicts your inventory needs based on past sales, today’s job seekers expect platforms to understand their skills and interests, then match them with the right opportunities.

This is how we catch a ride. How we find the new place to eat. How we shop. How we find that new show. This is normal. It’s not even new anymore.

Restaurants winning the hiring game right now are not afraid to shift budget away from traditional job boards, understanding that this generational shift is the now and future. They’re creating short videos showing behind-the-scenes kitchen action, having current staff share their experiences on social media, and making the application process mobile-friendly and quick.

I spoke to an operator today with 80 locations throughout the Midwest. I asked what her current hiring needs are. What locations are critical?
She said, “let’s be honest, every location is always hiring. If it is not a critical need, then it is an opportunity to level up. And now is as good a time as any to make a change.”

***Here’s another important note*** job seekers might not be actively searching for restaurant jobs, but they’re absolutely interested in opportunities that align with their interests and values. Your job is to make sure your positions show up on their feed.

Do not wait to change your strategy. If you’re not talking Gen Z, it’s because they’re talking to your competition across the street.

cheers,

Mary Pillow
